Did you know that when you flush the toilet, tiny drops of water can fly out and land on the floor? This experiment shows you how you can see these tiny drops come up out of the toilet.
You must have a grown-up to help you with this experiment. Otherwise, you might get food colouring on the floor and get into trouble! You might also get water from the toilet on your hands.
You will need:
Before you start, make sure that the toilet has been flushed properly. |
Put about 15ml (1 tablespoon) of food colouring in the toilet bowl. That's the bit that you wee or poo into. |
Lift up the toilet seat and stretch cling film across the toilet bowl, so it covers all of it and sticks to the outside of the toilet. |
Flush the loo. Can you see coloured drops of water fly up and stick to the cling film? If the cling film wasn't there, those drops could fly out and land on the floor. |
Look at the cling film through the magnifying glass. Can you see how many more tiny drops there are? They could all be carrying germs that can make you ill. |
When you have finished, ask a grown-up to take the cling film off the toilet. Make sure they put it in an outside bin. |

Don’t forget to wash your hands!! |
