Glossary of toilet-related words

Anus The hole your poo comes out of
Bacteria Germs
Bladder The balloon-like bag that holds your wee until you're ready to go to the toilet
Bowel incontinence When you can't control when you poo
Bowel movement Having a poo
Bowels Intestines (see below)
Bowl The part of the toilet that you wee or poo into
Chronic Something that goes on for a long time (usually an illness)
Cistern The top part of the toilet that holds the water
Constipation When you don't poo for a long time and your poo is dry and hard
Continence Control over weeing and pooing
Cubicle The individual space where the toilet is
Cystitis An infection in your urine
Dehydration When there's not enough water in your body
Diarrhoea Runny poo; when you have to poo a lot
Diurnal enuresis Wetting during the day
Dysfunctional voiding Inability to empty the bladder properly due to muscular problems (e.g. weeing that stops and starts)
Empty the bladder Have a wee
Empty the bowels Have a poo
Enuresis Wetting yourself
Faecal incontinence When you can’t control when you poo
Faeces Poo
Fibre Also known as roughage – it's something in your food that helps keep your bowels healthy
Gastroenteritis Upset tummy that can cause diarrhoea and/or vomiting
Incontinence When you can't control when you wee or poo
Intestines Long tubes along which food passes between the stomach and the anus
Kidneys You have two kidneys. These filter your blood to make wee
Kidney stones Small lumps in the kidneys which are made of calcium
Motion Poo
Nocturnal enuresis Wetting the bed
Overactive bladder Also known as unstable or irritable bladder. The bladder contracts before it is full, giving a sensation of needing to ‘go’ urgently
Pan The part of the toilet that you wee or poo into
Pass water Have a wee
Rectal To do with the rectum
Rectum The bit of your bowels nearest the bottom end (anus)
Renal To do with your kidneys
Residual urine Urine left in the bladder after a wee
Soiling Having a poo when you don't mean to
Stool Poo
Ureter The tube from the bladder up to the kidneys
Urethra The tube from the bladder to the outside of your body
Urinal A toilet for men and boys to wee into (you have to stand up to use it)
Urinary incontinence When you can't control when you wee
Urinary tract The tube from the bladder to the outside of your body
Urinary infection An infection in the urine e.g. cystitis
Urinate To have a wee
Urine Wee
Voiding Weeing
Waste Another term for poo (or wee)
