My Toilets are gross. The Urinals are old and disgusting. We need to have individual urinals like at my old school because the current urinals we have aren't private enough!
Bog Standard response:
It sounds like you have those horrible communal "trough" urinals. Government guidance discourages schools from using these since research has shown that at puberty, boys' use of urinals is problematic. The trough type in particular can contribute to toilet phobias such as 'shy bladder syndrome.' We advise: If urinals are used, there are at least one third of toilet pans to urinals in male toilet facilities. [A 50:50 ratio is best. If urinals are in individual cubicles a lower ratio is OK]. In the Islamic faith, men and boys cannot urinate standing up - they must sit down. Urinals are not visible from outside the toilets (e.g. through an open door) or visible via a mirror. Each urinal is individually screened for privacy or sited in individual cubicles to maximise privacy.

Some of our toilets are great but others are disgusting. One of the toilets in the year six mobile toilet doesn't even have a lock. We are getting a building done for us but that will be a while according to the builders. The other mobile with only one classroom in doesn't have a lock positioned properly. Thank you for your time.

Here at ___ Academy in Kent, we have cameras in both the boys and girls toilets. We are unable to use the toilets during lesson times. During break and lunch there are always yobs messing around in there, there are no locks on the doors, there's usually toilet paper, but the camera makes me feel uneasy when using the toilets. After school the toilets are locked, so you have to wait till you get home. The teachers have their own nice clean toilets, but some teachers use ours, are they allowed to do that? There are two small toilets for the boys in our school, one has the camera in it, and the other is extremely old fashioned, with rotting wood, no door locks and no toilet lid. So I'm always in a dilemma over which toilet to use. Our school has over 1300 students in it, and only 2 boys toilets. I think something should be done.
Bog Standard response:
We suggest you contact the school council and the chair of governors and write to them just as you have to us (you can avoid giving your name and say you are doing this because toilets are a sensitive and embarrassing issue). You need to remind them of their obligations under the Education (School Premises) Regulations 1999 that 1) require one toilet for every 20 pupils (urinals count as toilets too) with enough for both girls and boys 2) for the school to safeguard the health, safety and welfare of its pupils. You realise that some pupils make things worse and you would like the school to work with pupils on improving the toilets and pupils' behaviour so that pupils respect their toilets more and pupils are not put off using them. Are the governors aware the toilets are locked at the end of the school day? Provision for pupils in genuine need should be made during lessons - especially as during breaks you have to run the gauntlet of the yobs. They must put (strong) locks on the doors! It's surprising teachers even want to use your toilets! The Government doesn't forbid teachers using pupils' toilets and some argue, with some truth perhaps, that if teachers had to share toilets with pupils then the toilets would be kept a lot nicer and there would be less yobbish behaviour! But there are issues of privacy and child protection.

In these toilets there is no privvacy and all the tall girls can look in and watch you using the toilet. At the moment I am in detention and bursting for the toilet, but there is no privacy!!

When the woman came in to teach us about sanitary protection, she asked if we had bins in our toilets. We answered truthfully: yes, a few bins, but no doors!
