My daughter has had a history of withholding since 9 months old and this is still likely to be a problem by the time she starts school. Our consultant warned us that starting school was a time when withholding problems can start, or worsen, and so when viewing and selecting schools they suggested we take this into account so that's exactly what we did!!
Obviously it wasn't our only criteria but it was our overriding criteria as we knew how important it would be to our daughter. We looked at all the schools in our area and were surprised and disappointed to find only one seemed to have shown an active interest in this area. They'd made sure the toilets were as brightly coloured, clean, and welcoming as any other area of the school. The others weren't unclean but were dull, dismal, grey rooms, stuck in a time warp as far as the toilets were concerned, including those in a recently-built school where you think they would have known better. The classrooms were in huge contrast to this.
Another problem was looking at the staffing that the classes had. We were lucky in that our chosen school also has a high level of Teaching Assistants in each class meaning that it would draw less attention and cause less disruption if she does need help. They've also reassured us that they can cope with our daughter.
A wonderful campaign that I firmly support.

At last! Someone has recognised how disgusting school toilets are!

One of my earliest memories is of the vile toilets in my infant school. There were cobwebs and spiders and the toilets were just generally dirty. I was so scared of going in there, I regularly wet myself, and occasionally pooed myself too.

My teacher recommended to my parents that I be referred to an educational pyschologist to find out why I had such a problem with my bowels and bladder. She refused to believe my only problem was that the toilets were gross!

When I started work in a primary school a couple of years ago, I was amazed to see that standards hadn't really improved.

I honestly believe that one of the reasons I suffer so often from cystitis and kidney infections is because I used to go all day without using a toilet throughout my entire school life.

Well done for making a stand about this issue, and good luck!

If you get the toilets right, you get the teaching right.
