Judging Criteria

The Bog Standard team will assess your completed entry forms against an approved set of criteria. The criteria has been aligned with a panel of professionals including school staff, pupils, Healthy Schools teams, school nurses, continence advisors and partner organisations.

The criteria are divided into four sections:

  • Toilet Access
  • Toilet Facilities
  • Level of Standard
  • Servicing and Care

The criteria mirror the requirements outlined in the Bog Standard School Toilet Charter. This charter was created following widespread consultation amongst pupils and members of the Youth Parliament before the launch of the Bog Standard campaign in 2004.

Please note that random checks will also be carried out in some schools, arranged at a convenient time for your school.

Before you start completing the entry form you may wish to ask yourself if your school meets the School Toilet Charter that the School Toilet Award is based on. You will find adult and child-friendly versions here.

Is everyone happy with the standard of your toilets? You can use surveys to find out what pupils think. You can download surveys here.

If not, nominate an adult leader and devise and implement an action plan to improve your facilities, access arrangements, and management. You will find help throughout the Bog Standard website. There is also a separate section for pupils

We think it is beneficial to involve pupils in the whole process of evaluating the toilets and improving them. They have their own Pupil Assessment Entry Form that must be submitted at the same time as the School Entry Form.

You can find out here what over a thousand children and young people told us they want from their school toilets. The answers may surprise you.

If you have any queries about the School Toilet Award, please use our online enquiry form.
