About the Award
The national Bog Standard campaign has introduced a national School Toilet Award, to recognise and develop good toilet provision for pupils to a nationally approved standard. It has been created because so many pupils, teachers and parents contact Bog Standard, to tell us they think their school toilets should be better.
Inundated with requests to help improve standards of provision and access, we launched the School Toilet Award direct to schools in October 2010. This followed three years of piloting with some local Healthy Schools teams.
The Award has been reviewed by school staff, pupils, Healthy Schools teams, school nurses, continence advisors, Public Health, and our partner organisations.
Schools that meet the School Toilet Award criteria will receive a School Toilet Award certificate which will be valid for three years. The toilets don’t have to be new or fancy; they just have to answer the needs of all pupils.
The award criteria mirror the requirements outlined in the Bog Standard School Toilet Charter. This charter was created following widespread consultation amongst health and education organisations, pupils and members of the Youth Parliament before the launch of the Bog Standard campaign in 2004.
Schools that are judged to have gone further than the basic criteria
for the School Toilet Award and can demonstrate that they provide
pleasant and attractive toilets for their pupils will be awarded
a School Toilet Award with Distinction.
The School Toilet Award is self-assessed and open to all primary and secondary schools, including special schools, maintained and non-maintained, in the UK as well as to British schools overseas. Schools can apply for the Award online or by post. There is no cost to schools - entry and support materials are free.
To help monitor the standard of school toilets receiving the Award, Bog Standard works with partners to carry out random spot checks. If your school is picked you will be notified in advance and a convenient time set for a visit.
