What you can do

"Parents wondering where to send a child to school should have a look at the toilets before deciding. They reflect how a school treats its pupils."
Stuart McLeod, Headteacher, Southwell Primary School, Portland, Dorset.
The Independent, Education and Careers, 7 October 2004

If you’d like to help improve pupils’ toilets – either in your local community or nationwide – there are lots of ways you can help. Whether you are a parent, teacher, governor, health professional, or just want to get involved, there are resources to help you make your voice heard.

In this section, you will find lobby letters that you can download, amend and print off or e-mail. There are also links to help you find the right contact details for people like your MP and school governors.

There are resources that can be downloaded. These include teaching packs and guidance, which have been developed by health professionals to help both teachers and parents. Don’t miss the new, improved Toilet Checklists for Schools which are designed to help schools and pupils improve and maintain their toilets.

You can download and print a one page summary checklist for schools to check whether your school meets acceptable standards for toilet and drinking water facilities and access policies for pupils. PDF ICON for Downloading Children Poster

The school management page has information on strategies to help deal with relevant issues, such as vandalism. Ways of involving pupils in tackling problems are also covered.
